John Mullen, Principal Archeologist, participated in International Migratory Bird Day by attending the Mason Neck Eagle Fest in hope to see some warblers. Our Gainesville office also hosts a plethora of migratory birds; so far we have seen scarlet tanagers, orange-crowned and Tennessee warblers, northern parulas, northern waterthrush, common yellowthroats, and rose-breasted grosbeaks at the feeder in our raingarden. Check out these awesome photos John captured at one of our birdfeeders and at the event! John represented FRIENDS OF FAIRFAX COUNTY ARCHAEOLOGY AND CULTURAL RESOURCES at the event. He serves as FOFA's President, and we are proud of his leadership and volunteer work! https://lnkd.in/egkuCjcD Virginia State Parks Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation #wssi #migratorybirds #birdwatch #birdwatching #warbler #grosbeak #fofa #fairfaxva #masonneck #eaglefest2024 #vastateparks #vadcr

Need a break from this weather and afternoon lull? How about celebrating two-toad-Tuesday with us! Okay, so it may not be an official holiday - but the markings on these toads are the perfect camouflage for foliage and in these waters. Are you able to spot BOTH toads? Our scientists observed this pair during benthic monitoring at our Northern Virginia Stream Restoration Bank in Reston. Comment with a 🐸🐸 when you see them! #WSSI #wetlands #stream #camouflage #toad #toads #restonva #nvsrb #hidenseek #nova

Looking forward to seeing this project in the ground and providing ecological benefit in Prince Edward County, VA, thanks to our partnership with @DaveyMitigation and KBS Earthworks, Inc.
We're excited to be kicking off construction with KBS Earthworks on a permittee-responsible mitigation project in Prince Edward County, VA. Designed by Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. (WSSI), a Davey Tree Company, the project will restore and enhance 52 acres of wetlands by removing fill, regrading, and planting native species in an agricultural field that had been degraded after years of grazing by livestock, while offering a timely mitigation solution for our permittee client. #wetlands #ecologicalrestoration #conservation

We're excited about the tree-mendous impact that will come from the more than 1,600 native trees that Josh Racer, WSSI Ecosystems Specialist, planted with volunteers from Friends Of The Rappahannock and Dominion Energy in Fauquier County earlier this spring. These trees can have a positive impact on ecosystem health through water uptake (reducing runoff), providing habitat, and serving as a food source. #wssi #wetlands #trees #community #volunteering #planting #virginia #fauquierva

#FeelGoodFriday WSSI's Jason Kicinski, Brandon Zebron, and Jason Beeler attended the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) Mid-Atlantic Stream Tour yesterday, visiting four restored stream channels in NOVA, including Donaldson Run Tributary B (Arlington Co.), Accotink (Fairfax Co.), and Rabbit Branch (Fairfax Co.). WSSI has provided construction management and construction inspection services at Donaldson Run. We have also designed the restoration at Accotink and Rabbit Branch and provided construction inspections services. Currently, we are providing post-construction monitoring at Accotink and Rabbit Branch. We were happy to see these sites and the Hollin Hills site (Fairfax Co.) looking so good and providing environmental uplift! #wssi #steamrestoration #streamtour #projectsite #professionalservices #constructionmanagement #construction #restoration #nova #fairfax #fairfaxva #arlingtonco #
